The South End Neighborhood Revitalization
Zone Minutes Of The Meeting Tuesday, January 11, 2005 Lathon Wider Community Center President Sheila Barney opened the meeting at 6:35 pm. The informal meeting started with Sheila announcing that Rachael Goldberg would be speaking and answering questions about the Transitway at next month’s meeting. Phil McKain said that he had heard that the URC was awarding financial assistance to tenants on a first-come-first-served basis. A 3 family building proposed for 24 Cedar St will be discussed at the upcoming Zoning Board meeting. All variances sought by Pitney Bowes for the sale of their manufacturing plant property were granted. The buyer pool is now down to 5. John Hiden, owner of the nearby Hiden Galleries was awarded the old fire house on the corner of Henry and Pacific Streets by the City after a proposal/bid process. The newly revised bylaws will be available for review at February’s meeting. And the NRZ web page should also be available next month. Sgt Chip White recounted that there had been a recent rash of commercial burglaries. More police had been put on the scene. The Department believes they may have nabbed the culprit. He suggested that in addition to a proposed survey on the NRZ web site seeking residents with skills to be offered in after-school or weekend craft programs for children, that residents could also comment on neighborhood policing. Lorell Guydon announced that the NRZ had been awarded a $7000 grant from CTAC (Community Training and Assistance Center), a Boston based organization that will provide community leadership training along with technical assistance to expand the NRZ’s outreach into the neighborhood. Lorell bemoaned the fact that so few surveys had been received back to her office from the 700 that had been sent out. Lorell is also promoting the enabling of high schoolers to visit colleges such as The John Jay College of Criminal Justice for the experience. It was suggested that some of the grant money be used to take interested members of the Hispanic community out to lunch. Phil McKain and Frances Gerety both agreed that language and cultural barriers needed to be overcome . The Greater Stamford Hispanic Chamber of Commerce whose offices are on Canal Street would again be asked to come to the monthly meetings. The meeting closed at 7 pm
