South End Neighborhood Revitalization Zone
Minutes of the Meeting
Tuesday, May 10, 2005
Lathan Wider Community Center

President Sheila Barney opened the meeting at 6:40 p.m. introducing Jae Dennis the artist of the LAA (Loft Artist Association) who was hired to paint murals on three signal boxes.
Jae stated that her intention was to paint a theme in a postcard motif. However, it was pointed out that no wording was allowed according to the agreement with the City of Stamford. Some of the proposed themes presented by Jae were not a reflection of the South End History. One scene proposed by Jae Dennis (a train scene) had already been painted by Zora on Atlantic Street near the train station. It was suggested by Francis Gerety and John Karamon members of the NRZ that Ms. Dennis speak with Renee Kahn of The Historic Neighborhood Preservation Program Inc and then return before the NRZ in the
near future with some new ideas and designs.

Catheryn Lavery passed out the Public Safety Evaluation for Weed & Seed. Those in attendance filled out the four-page survey and returned it to Catheryn Lavery.

Sheila expressed dismay that the food vendor who agreed to provide the food at the upcoming Carnival scheduled for May 27, 2005 and May 28,2005 was backing out and time was getting short for engaging a new vendor. Suggestions were welcomed.

Lorell Guydon requested that anyone interested in writing an article for the summer issue of the South End Rising newsletter, should make the submission by the June 15th deadline.

It was announced that the NRZ was partnering with the Adult Continuing Education to offer free income tax training.

Sgt White announced that “pocket bikes” were now banned in Stamford.adding that properly sized (visible) two wheeled conveyances below 50cc were still allowed under the law with no license plate and registration.

Sheila reminded all that the Carnival was set for Friday, May 27th, 5 -9pm and Saturday May 28th, 11 – 8pm., recalling that this holiday weekend was the only opening available for Savin Rock Amusement. It was hoped that raffle tickets for the DVD player, computer, etc would be ready for selling by next week.

Sheila advised that this month was the last chance for Section 8 landlords to take advantage of available funding from the Weed & Seed Housing Initiative to pay for outside lighting.

Sheila closed the meeting at 7:17pm
