South End Neighborhood Revitalization Zone
Initiative Minutes of the Meeting Tuesday, November 9, 2004 Lathon Wider Community Center President Sheila Barney opened the meeting at 6:35 p.m. A brief update on the proposed Community Health Center was given by Mr. Ludwig Spinelli, the Director, who said that the $1.5 million bonding approval was currently being held up in a State Committee. Patricia Gallegos announced that last month the Federal EPA had awarded the South End and West Side a $30,000.00 community Education Network Grant to study indoor and outdoor environmental triggers for asthma, particularly in children. Dr. Forte educated those in attendance about this illness and how it can be managed. She stated that the grant will provide in-home assessment, education and equipment. Data will be collected through day care centers. An alarming 24% of children in these two communities are affected by asthma more than twice the city wide rate. Phil McKain felt that this study should serve to make this problem a city planning issue and said its great benefit would be in raising community awareness. Lina Morielli and Dana Scinto invited all in the community to visit the Loft Artists Association open studios, November 13th and 14th. John Bethea talked about the expanded offerings at the CTE's Enterprise Zone Job employment service. Tuesday mornings at the Center between 9 a.m. and noon workshops will be held to assist in updating resumes, writing cover letters, developing effective job search strategies, improving interviewing skills, etc. Laurel Anderson and Sheila quickly previewed some features of the NRZ web site (www.southendnrz.org) which is hoped to be up and on line by the end of the year. Sgt White gave the Weed & Seed report. He spoke about the recent fights in the community, saying CTE is where some kids have come to talk about the violence. He "advertised" again for any Section 8 qualifiers, applications were still being accepted for the lighting grants. Lorell Guydon announced that 1000 Neighborhood Surveys were being sent out November 11th. She encouraged all South End residents and businesses to return them with their feedback. A committee has been organized to plan a carnival which will be held Memorial Day weekend next year at the Lathan Wider Community Center. Lorell organized the first Senior Bus trip to the Mohegan Sun on December 8. Lorell reminded all that the Christmas tree lighting event at St.Lukes is scheduled for December 9. She asked that any submissions for the February Winter Edition of the Newsletter be in by the January 20 deadline. The Stamford Advocate will be writing an upcoming feature article on the South End. Pitney Bowes will be sponsoring the Holiday party therefore next months meeting will start at 6:00 p.m. Patrick Philbin of W&M Properties was thanked for making possible the landscape improvements at the entrance to 34 Woodland. Tickets for the Lord & Taylor benefit bash to be held November 17th ( all ticked sale proceeds will go directly to the NRZ) can still be purchased from Ben Branch, Sheila Barney, Patrick Philbin and Arlen Henock. The meeting adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
